It is hard to believe that Vegan Action has been certifying products for 25 years. What started in 1999 with a simple idea — to help people identify products that are truly vegan — has grown into one of the most trusted symbols in the plant-based movement.
Looking back, we are filled with gratitude. Gratitude for the brands that took a chance on certification before vegan was a household word. Gratitude for the shoppers who sought out those first products. And gratitude for the community that continues to carry this mission forward.
How It All Began
In the late 90s, the word “vegan” was not nearly as common as it is today. Shopping for vegan products often meant scanning long ingredient lists, asking questions, and still feeling uncertain. The Certified Vegan Logo was created to take away that confusion and to give people confidence in their choices.
Some of the very first certified products may look familiar to you. Do you remember these?
There were also surprises like personal care items, cookies, and even personal lubricant. These early certifications showed that vegan living touches every part of life, not just what we eat.
The Growth of a Movement
Through the 2000s and 2010s, more and more brands began to carry the logo. Vegan products increased in market share in places that once seemed impossible — mainstream grocery chains, restaurants, beauty aisles, and fitness shelves.
Every product certified during these years told a bigger story: that compassion and innovation could go hand in hand.
Where We Are Today
Fast forward to today, and the variety of certified products is truly inspiring. From comfort foods to gourmet treats, from skincare to supplements, the vegan market has expanded in ways that reflect both creativity and demand.
Here are some of the newest additions to the Vegan.org family:
This list could go on and on, which shows just how much the world has changed in 25 years. What once felt niche is now becoming mainstream.
Looking to the Future
We know the work is far from finished. There are still many people learning about veganism, and many more products waiting to be certified. But the progress so far gives us hope.
If the first 25 years have shown us anything, it is that small choices matter. A single product on a shelf can inspire someone to try something new, and that choice ripples outward into a kinder, more sustainable world.
So here’s to the first 25 years — and to the many more ahead. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.
