Description

A crispy, sweet and tangy takeout favorite made right in your own kitchen

This General Tso’s Tofu brings all the irresistible flavors of the classic takeout dish straight to your table. Crispy golden tofu, a glossy sweet and tangy sauce and a gentle kick of heat come together to make a meal that feels bold, comforting and totally satisfying. Every bite has that perfect balance of sticky, savory and just a little spicy.

It is surprisingly simple to prepare and so rewarding. The tofu crisps up beautifully thanks to a light cornstarch coating, and the homemade sauce thickens into a gorgeous glaze in minutes. Serve it over warm rice and you have a cozy, delicious dinner that tastes just as good as takeout and feels even better because you made it yourself.

Ingredients

Scale

For the General Tso’s tofu:

  • 2 tbsp tamari or soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 10 ounces firm tofu (275 g), cubed
  • 6 tbsp cornstarch
  • Extra virgin olive to taste
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced

For the sauce:

  • 3 tbsp tamari or soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 3 tbsp vegetable stock or water
  • 3 tbsp cane, coconut or brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne powder

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix the tamari and vinegar until combined.

  2. Add the tofu cubes and let them marinate for at least 5 minutes.

  3. Drain the tofu. Place one third of the cubes in a freezer bag with 2 tablespoons of cornstarch and toss until coated. Repeat with the remaining tofu and cornstarch.

  4. Heat a little oil in a skillet over medium high heat. Cook the tofu until golden brown on all sides. Remove and set aside.

  5. Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring often, until lightly golden.

  6. Mix all sauce ingredients in a bowl until smooth.

  7. Pour the sauce into the skillet and cook, stirring frequently, until it thickens.

  8. Add the crispy tofu back to the skillet and stir to coat. Cook for 1 to 2 more minutes.

  9. Remove from heat. Serve over warm white rice and garnish with sesame seeds and chives if you like.

  10. Store leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
