This umami-rich shoyu glazed tofu features pan-fried tofu tossed in a sticky, savory San-J Shoyu sauce with garlic, ginger, and chili garlic heat. A simple, comforting vegan dish perfect over rice or noodles.
Ingredients
-
3 tablespoons Certified Vegan San-J Shoyu Soy Sauce
-
2 tablespoons mirin
-
1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
-
1/3 cup dark brown sugar
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
1 teaspoon minced ginger
-
1 teaspoon neutral oil, for pan frying
-
1 package extra firm tofu
-
1 scallion, sliced, divided
-
1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce
Instructions
-
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine shoyu, mirin, toasted sesame oil, dark brown sugar, garlic, and ginger. Stir constantly and bring to a low boil until the sugar is fully dissolved.
-
Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring often, until the sauce thickens slightly and becomes glossy. Remove from heat and set aside.
-
Heat a 10-inch pan over medium heat and add neutral oil. Break the tofu into chunky pieces or cube it if preferred.
-
Pan fry the tofu until lightly golden and crisp on the edges.
-
Pour the prepared sauce over the tofu, making sure it is fully coated.
-
Add chili garlic sauce and half of the sliced scallions. Stir fry for about 2 minutes until everything is well combined and heated through.
-
Remove from heat and serve over rice or noodles. Top with remaining scallions.
Notes
Freeze and thaw the tofu for extra texture if desired.
Stir the sauce constantly to prevent burning as it thickens.
Adjust chili garlic sauce to match your spice preference.
Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
