Did you know that 6.3 percent of the waste stream is from clothing and household textiles? Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles (SMART) says that’s equal to 81 pounds of textiles being thrown away each year in the United states. In the U.S., the EPA estimated that the generation of textiles in 2015 was 16 million tons. Sadly, more than half of the amount created ends up in a landfill. 

SMART says that almost 95 percent of gently used clothing can be reused or recycled. Luckily, there are several ways you can help reduce the amount of clothing and other textile products from going into landfills.
