Default Hero Background

Krissi Vandenberg

Executive Director
Leadership

Krissi began volunteering with Vegan Action in Berkeley, California in 1998 and became the Executive Director in 2001 just before bringing the organization to Richmond, Virginia. She has been vegan since 1995, inspired by friends and the British cookzine Soy Not Oi!, and co-founded the Richmond Animal Rights Network.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Master of Science in Sociology, and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Virginia Commonwealth University, where she also taught for two years. Krissi has presented on vegan issues at festivals across the country and was a top presenter at the 2015 Nonprofit Learning Point Summit. She is also a Certified Tree Steward and passionate about environmental advocacy.

Her personal passions include punk ethics, feminism, hugging trees, adopting rescused animals, and crafting what she proudly calls the best lentil loaf in town. Krissi is a proud mom to an amazing son, Arrow, who is also vegan and pursing a degree in Environmental Science. She is regularly disheartened by the phenomenon of the ex-vegan and dreams of writing a book on the subject, weaving together her academic background in sociology with decades of lived experience in vegan activism.
